The Broncos and the Panthers had their Super Bowl 50 on February 7, 2016.
If you’re a business owner, you know that you have your Super Bowl 50 every day.
Every day your team decides whether or not they will show up. Every day your clients vote with their dollars whether or not they will stay with you. Every day your vendors and partners decide whether or not they will continue to work with you.
Whether you and your team realize it or not, you hold that:
attitudes that lead to thoughts
thoughts that lead to actions
actions that form habits and
habits that lead to business success or failure.
What we saw at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, this past Sunday was the “business result” of a team built on the attitude of Grinders.
Gary Kubiak is not flashy. Wade Phillips is not flashy. And certainly a 39-year old Peyton Manning is no longer the 55-touchdown-throwing Peyton Manning of old.
But from General Manager John Elway to Head Coach Gary Kubiak to every team member of the organization — even to scout team wide receiver Jordan Taylor — this team has the attitude of Grinders.
Manning, the only NFL quarterback to win 200 games said,
“It is very special,” Manning reflected. “The game was much like our season. This game tested our toughness, our resilience, our unselfishness. It’s only fitting that it turned out this way. This is a great bunch of guys to play with. I feel very, very grateful.” (Source)
Even Super Bowl 50 MVP Von Miller said he wished he could have shared the award with the whole defense.
So are the Broncos resting on their laurels? Absolutely not. After the Super Bowl Parade, GM Elway is already working on a plan: doing all he can to keep this #1 defense intact!
So how might you win your Super Bowl 50 today? Being a Grinder is a powerful way to start. Consider these potential areas:
1. Grinders believe winning is always possible. Period.
The best place to begin is with an attitude check: ask yourself, “Do I have a positive attitude?” If not, the best place to start is with a change of your own attitude. Only then is it good to start tinkering to improving the morale of your organization!
2. Grinders set SMART goals. And they have plans to back them up.
Elway built the Super Bowl 50 winners through the draft and free agency additions. He had a plan to fix the defense quickly after Super Bowl XLVIII. Within a single 24 hour period, he acquired defensive end DeMarcus Ware, cornerback Aqib Talib and safety T.J. Ward in free agency, and planned to fill the remaining defensive gaps in the draft. Have you set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Realistic and Timely) goals? Are you utterly committed to them?
3. Grinders are servant-leaders who want others to look great.
Does your team help one another succeed and look great? Or is there more focus on who gets credit within your organization?
4. Grinders make success look easy.
Have you graduated from SMART goals to BHAGs (Big Hairy Audacious Goals)? Do you have a bold plan to achieve those?
The Denver Broncos Grinders reflect the character of their leaders Kubiak, Phillips and Manning. They chose the attitude that led to the right “business result.”
Go and do likewise and win your Super Bowl today!
